End of Life Announcement for Windows 2000 and XP Service Pack 2

Microsoft support for the Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Windows 2000 operating systems will end July 13, 2010, and support for the Windows Vista Release to Manufacturing (RTM) operating system will end April 13, 2010. You should also advise customers against running an unsupported operating system. The Windows 7 RC will fully expire on June 1, 2010. PCs running the Windows 7 RC will continue shutting down every two hours and files won’t be saved during shutdown. In addition, the wallpaper will change to a solid black background with a persistent message on the desktop. You’ll also get periodic notifications that Windows isn’t genuine. That means the PC may no longer be able to obtain optional updates or downloads requiring genuine Windows validation.

Windows 7 RTM and XP Mode RC

Well it seems its time for another new operating system release.  For those MSDN subscribers Windows 7 RTM code was just released for download today.  While this release will undoubtedly generate a large number of desktop migrations Microsoft has done a excellent job creating tools that are being released around this product to make the migration smooth.  One tool that I am very fond of is the XP Mode application which will leverage Microsoft's Virtual PC to allow legacy devices and applications to still run under the new operating system.  With any migration the biggest hold up still seems to be migrating line of business applications and legacy hardware it seems Microsoft has hit the mark with the XP Mode tool. Today the tool is still in a release candidate but you can still download it here and evaluate it before it is released to the public.
